Tin Can Mailman

January 24, 2013 By Helen

Tin Can MailmanWe visited Tin Can Mailman while in Chinatown. It’s a small, packed-to-the-gills shop full of Hawaiiana. The proprietor was friendly and helpful. He explained that the term Tin Can Mailman is derived from swimmers who used to deliver mail to a tiny island where there was no place for a boat to land. These swimmers would convey mail sealed in biscuit tins from passing ships.
