Max, Golden Eagle captured and tagged in Andes, NY

A bit after 7am this morning, I received email and a phone call – a Golden Eagle was captured in Andes. After several days of attempting to capture one, finally success. By 8:30am I was at the specified location watching the wonderful group who made this happen. We spent 4+ hours watching as Scott Van Arsdale, of the DEC, and others held, measured, weighed and otherwise took note of this juvenile Golden Eagle’s particulars. A telemetry unit was attached to the bird and will send information about the bird’s habits over the course of its life. The unit looks bulky, but is in fact extremely light-weight and should not inhibit the bird’s activities.

This eagle has been named Max by one of the supporters of this project.

You can read more about this project at the Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society website.

A good writeup of the day is here at Watershed Post. But also read a followup about why the trappings are being done.
